Mother’s Day will celebrate its 110th anniversary on this May 13, thanks to Anna Jarvis, who holds the title of “mother” of the long-standing May holiday. On May 10, 1908, Jarvis honored her late mother, Ann, with 500 white carnations sent to Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in her hometown of Grafton, West Virginia, as well as a celebration in Philadelphia where Jarvis lived at the time. Jarvis, a copywriter, funded the mother-honoring celebration primarily by her inheritance.
